Catch Up 1

My computer is fixed! Yay!! But now I have so much catching up to do. Boo!

First let’s start with Q’s first birthday back in the beginning of July. Whew! So long ago. Did you guys hear we’ve been in a heat wave! It was 107 degrees here early in the week. Ack! Anyway, I told you all about the gifts PZ and I made for her here, but I hadn’t gotten a chance to show you the ball or all the other fun stuff I made!

The party was a lot of fun, btw. Thanks everyone who was able to attend! We had a pot luck picnic lunch at a local park and the older kids got to run around like goof balls and hang out by the duck pond and such. Good times!

I also wanted to show the blankets I made for Craft Hope. The deadline ended on the 25th, which was coincidently MY birthday. Whoo Hoo! I spent the day hosting a yard sale in 105 degree heat. Yay! But all kidding aside, it was a wonderful day. Full of fresh flowers, yummy pastries, and special good wishes from all my friends. I got showered in rose petals by an adorable three year old boy, for goodness sakes! Thirty-three must be the year I become a goddess.

Lemonade by the Glass

Everybody loves lemonade. It’s a great drink on a hot summer day. Here’s
a basic recipe you can use to make a glass of homemade lemonade.
3 tablespoons Sugar Syrup (recipe below)
1 to 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 cup cold water

In a tall glass mix together the Sugar Syrup, lemon juice, and water.
Add ice cubes and enjoy.
Serves 1

Sugar Syrup

1 cup sugar
1 cup water

1. In a medium saucepan combine the sugar and water. Turn heat on
over medium-low and cook, stirring until the sugar is dissolved.
2. Using a pot holder, remove pan from the heat. Cool the syrup to
room temperature, then pour in a jar and refrigerate, covered, until
ready to use. (The syrup will keep for weeks in the refrigerator.)

Heirloom Brownies
This is a brownie lover’s brownie. It is crusty on the top, soft in the middle, and rich throughout. Make an extra batch to share with friends.

5 tablespoons butter
2 squares (1 ounce each) unsweetened chocolate
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¾ cup all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1. Set the rack in the middle of the oven. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease an 8-inch square baking pan. Set aside.

2. In a small saucepan, combine the butter and chocolate. Melt over low heat, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon, until the butter and chocolate are completely smooth.

3. Using a pot holder, remove the pan from the heat. With a rubber spatula, scrape the chocolate mixture into a large bowl. Stir in the sugar, eggs, and vanilla and mix until smooth. Add the flour, baking powder, and salt and combine well. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.

4. Bake for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Using oven mitts, remove the pan from the oven and place on a wire rack to cool for 5 minutes. Cut into squares.

Must Make Monday – Anyone Hungry for Dessert?

Doing something a little bit different this week. We’re talking about food! I frequent a few foodie blogs and have actually been trying some of the recipes featured and thought I’d share the ones I’ve tried and enjoyed. Lots of desserts here since I’ve had a few birthdays to make cakes for.

Smitten Kitchen’s Strawberry Rhubarb Pie was my first pie ever. I made it in June after we picked fresh strawberries at Kruger’s Farm on Sauvie Island. I subbed whole wheat pastry flour for white, but other than that I followed it word for word. It was scrumptious!

Inspiration Wednesday – Wardrobe Refashion and Trashion Nation

Wardrobe Refashion is this great blog all about restyling something unwearable into something fabulous. To join the fun, you must take a pledge to not buy anything new for 2,4,6 months etc. up to LIFE (you choose how long you want to pledge for) and to restyle something from your closet or the thrift shop at least once a week posting about it on the blog. You are allotted ONE Get Out Of Jail Free card that you can use every two months just in case there is some awesome sale or some item you just can’t live without. Here are some of my favorites.

I’m not sure I’m quite ready to take the pledge at Wardrobe Refashion yet, but I’m working my way there. I’ll have to get better at BIG girl clothes first, not just kid’s stuff. I do like to recycle as much as I can in my projects, not only is it cheaper, but I can’t help but love all the old vintage fabrics and notions. I did my time working and running resale clothing shops, so for me that is “old hat”. Ha! But some of the stuff these crafters come up with is just amazing. I’m so inspired. How about you? What inspires you to create? Do you have a favorite recycled material?

Your Tip for Tuesday: Lee Merideth

I’m so excited to have Lee Merideth of do stuff! and leethal fame here to talk to us about which thrift store items she recommends upcycling into craft materials. She also drops a LOT of awesome project ideas and tutorials our way. Thanks so much, Lee!

I have a huge stash of assorted thrifted things in my craft studio, since I try to use recycled materials in my crafting whenever possible, and usually when inspiration strikes I want to get started right away! Having these piles of recycled fabrics and other materials right there not only means I rarely have to make a trip to the craft store when I want to start a new project, but it also tends to bring something special to the project – by limiting myself to using these thrifted items I have on hand, my creations often become something they never would have had I shopped for project-specific materials at the fabric store instead. Some things I like to stock up on at thrift stores:

-Sweaters! This is my number one category of craft stash – I unravel sweaters to recycle the yarn, I felt wool sweaters to use the felt, and I convert cotton (or otherwise non-felted) sweaters into new clothes or other projects. I choose my sweaters based on fiber content (essential when looking to felt, important for unraveling too, especially if planning to dye), color, feel, etc, depending on my plans for each one.

yarn2

-T-shirts! My favorite material for sewing projects, t-shirt fabric is soft and versatile. I use tees in all kinds of projects, from huge t-shirt quilts (well I’ve only made one of those, but it’s awesome!), to clothes like skirts/shirts/dresses, to small projects like headbands and cuffs, or tee scraps as applique. I choose my thrift buys based on color, image, softness, and size (but often the color and image are great enough that size doesn’t matter, I’ll find something to use it for).

-Sheets! This includes both full size bed sheets and pillowcases – there are so many things you can use sheet fabric for, if you see a pattern or color that grabs your eye, get it! You can use full sheets and pillowcases both for big-ish projects like skirts, bags, etc (I even did a roundup of tons of different pillowcase projects) and I love to have them around for smaller uses, like patches, applique, or other embellishments. When choosing sheets to buy, just pick the fabrics you love!

-Clothes! Other clothes besides tees and sweaters can be great for fabric also, like sweatshirts, jeans, pants, skirts, tops, and shirts. I only buy these when the fabric is great, or if I have a specific project in mind and I know what I need. I like having several sweatshirts and jeans on hand though, as these can be great fabrics to work with.

-Ties! Neck ties are a fantastic craft supply, as you can see in the roundup of tie projects I did awhile back, so I always grab cheap ones in good patterns when I find them. Several can be combined into a big project, or if you find one you really love you can make it into something special – I love using leftover bits for little appliques!

-Books! I absolutely love the imagery in a lot of old science books from the 60′s and 70′s, as well as some old cookbooks, and of course there are the craft books! I’m sure to have some of these on hand for whenever I need some good imagery – I use them on cards, for CD sleeves, in decoupage projects… I’m not a big paper crafter, but it’s often useful to have my book stash!

cuffkits

-Jewelry! My favorite kind of beads are recycled beads, so I always take a peek at the jewelry section to see if there are any cool looking beads on bracelets or necklaces that I can take apart. I don’t do tons of beadwork, but I do make myself earrings for fun, and I make beaded stitch markers for knitting, so I love having a stash of recycled beads for when the mood hits me.

-Craft Supplies! Have to include this – not all thrift stores have a decent selection, but sometimes I’ll come across bags of buttons, yarn, thread… and if you’re into vintage sewing patterns, those are super common! So always take a look and grab what you think you’d want to use in future projects!

Friday Fabric Show – Showing off my knittn kitten booty while I bake

I am approximately eighteen minutes from being royally disappointed or tickled pink. It all depends on how the birthday cake I’m currently baking for Q comes out. I’m very excited about this cake. It is my first time baking a pink lady cake and I just know it is either going to be a new favorite or a complete disaster. Such is my luck with baking.

Well, while I wait, instead of sitting here playing the will it or won’t it be good game, I’ve decided to show off some of my fabric finds from my Wednesday sojourn to Knittn Kitten. I went in search of flannel for the Craft Hope blankets I’m planning on making and ended up also getting some really great tee shirt fabric and waffle knit (not shown because while I got a lot of it, it was just white and that would be boring) which are what I have used for my own girls’ swaddle blankets. Lots of good stretch! I, of course, also found some fun cotton prints that I just needed to have for my stash and some doodads I couldn’t live without.

Bloomers, Bonnets, and Birds

Two Mama friends with kiddos I’ve made stuff for recently were kind enough to send some pictures for me to post. The first is C and I made both pairs of bloomers. Two other crafty ladies made her hat and sweater. Lucky girl! And the second baby love is S whose Mama and I did a crafty trade off, the hat for a one-of-a-kind, made for me collage. Sweet!! Thanks Anne! Ah, the fringe benefits.
